What is it?
As organic waste decomposes in landfills, it produces a mixture that is roughly half methane. Left unmanaged, this potent greenhouse gas escapes into the atmosphere. Landfill gas capture projects install systems to collect this gas, which can then be used in the generation of electricity, in the production of renewable natural gas, or in the creation of thermal energy.
While this is an effective way to reduce the impact of existing landfills, the benefits last only as long as the gas continues to be generated and the infrastructure remains operational.
