What is it?
BECCS combines two processes: growing plants to naturally absorb CO₂ as they grow), and using carbon capture technology to capture and store the CO₂ released when burning the plants to generate energy. Since the plants absorbed atmospheric CO₂ as they grew, capturing the emissions when they are burned creates a net removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
It is a dual strategy: generating usable energy while also removing carbon. On the other hand, there are concerns over the enormous amounts of land required to grow the biomass needed, which can compete with food production and natural ecosystems.
What does Deduci think?
BECCS is considered to be a leading CDR pathway, accounting for a substantial portion of durable CDR credits contracted to date. Its mid-level price point makes it more affordable than Direct Air Capture while delivering the same level of permeance. It also generates low-carbon energy that further reduces the need for fossil fuel-powered energy generation.
