What is it?
Biochar is produced by heating organic materials like wood, crop waste, or manure in a low-oxygen environment, a process known as pyrolysis. The result is a charcoal-like substance that is very stable and resistant to decomposition. When added to soil, it can store carbon for hundreds of years.
Beyond carbon storage, biochar can improve soil fertility, water retention, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. While it is not as permanent as geological storage, it is a practical and relatively low-cost approach that also delivers agricultural co-benefits.

What does Deduci think?
Biochar is the most readily available durable carbon removal option, with credits consistently available on the spot market. It is also a cost-competitive removal option, making it a great choice for new and mature buyers.
