What is it?
Ozone depleting substances are typically synthetic gases used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and other equipment. They are extraordinarily potent greenhouse gases and have a warming potential thousands of times greater than CO₂. ODS destruction projects involve collecting old or discarded refrigerants and destroying them permanently.
Destroying ODS is not a reversable action, making this one of the most permanent and straightforward types of carbon offset available. It is essentially the reduction of a known, highly concentrated source of greenhouse gas.
What does Deduci think?
While The Montreal Protocol banned the production of many ozone depleting substances, it did not ban their use. ODS destruction projects fund the collection and proper disposal of ozone depleting substances before they can be used and emitted into the atmosphere. They are considered one of the highest quality types of carbon avoidance credits.
